Why Choose a Lighting Designer? Part 1: The Artistic and Creative Value

In this first part of my three-part series on why choosing a lighting designer is essential, I’ll share my experience of the artistic and creative value that a lighting designer can bring to all projects.

’ve always felt that lighting is often perceived as the unsung hero in design, quietly shaping the way we experience spaces and environments. While many may consider lighting as a purely functional element, the truth is that it plays a pivotal role in the artistry of a space.

This is where the expertise of a professional lighting designer becomes invaluable.

Lighting goes beyond its means to simply illuminate a room. Indeed, lighting is a powerful tool that can transform a space, evoke emotions and enhance the overall atmosphere.

s I’ve talked about in my previous Journal entries, lighting is about creating an environment where light itself becomes a storyteller, engaging and transforming perceptions in deeply impactful ways.

A skilled lighting designer understands how to use light to create depth, texture and focal points, turning a simple room into a captivating environment. By carefully selecting the right fixtures, colours, temperatures and more, a lighting designer can craft a visual narrative that aligns with the intended mood and purpose of the space, its story.

I’d like to share a philosophy that’s always resonated with me while designing, that is the philosophy of "AAA" which emphasises the integration of Architecture, Activity and Atmosphere.

For me, this framework encapsulates the core principles of effective lighting design:

  1. Architecture: Lighting should enhance the architectural features of a space. This means making vertical surfaces visible, supporting perception and adjusting light individually to functional areas. The size and placement of luminaires should be carefully chosen to complement room heights and architectural elements.
  2. Activity: Good lighting design supports the activities that take place in a space. This includes supporting circadian rhythms through architectural lighting, ensuring visual comfort, adjusting brightness to suit the visual tasks at hand and facilitating interpersonal communication. After all, lighting is about enhancing how we interact with our environment.
  3. Atmosphere: The atmosphere of a space is significantly influenced by lighting. Setting light according to personal preferences, adapting to the natural course of daylight and changing the mood with different light scenes are all ways a lighting designer can tailor the ambience to fit the desired experience.

s we move into the creative process, I do find one of the most compelling reasons to choose a lighting designer is our ability to take a creative vision and turn it into reality. My process always begins with gaining a deep understanding of my client’s needs and the unique characteristics of the space, understanding the deeper story of the project.

As lighting designers, we think about where lights should go, how light will interact with different textures, colours and materials, and ultimately how we create the desired effect.

For example, in a contemporary living room, a lighting designer might use a combination of recessed lighting to highlight architectural features, floor lamps to create cosy reading nooks, or subtle LED strips to add a modern edge. Each light source is chosen both for its function and for how it contributes to the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of the room.

Lighting designers excel in crafting environments that are truly bespoke, leveraging our expertise to surpass standard solutions with innovation and customization. We are at the forefront of emerging technologies and trends, such as smart lighting systems, tuneable lights, and energy-efficient LED solutions. These advancements provide unparalleled control and personalization, allowing spaces to seamlessly adapt to various moods, times of day, or specific tasks.

What has always brought me great fulfilment in my lighting career is the opportunity to collaborate with architects, interior designers, and artists to create unique, one-of-a-kind lighting installations. This aligns with my core philosophy of light as a storyteller. Whether it's a striking chandelier gracing a grand foyer or a subtle ambient light installation in a minimalist setting, our artistic touch is what truly distinguishes our work.

hoosing a lighting designer means choosing to elevate your space beyond the ordinary. It means embracing the artistry of light and understanding how it can shape our perceptions, moods and experiences.

The creative value that a professional lighting designer brings goes beyond illumination and into telling a story through light, enhancing the architecture, supporting the activities within, and ultimately creating a personalised atmosphere that resonates with those who inhabit it.

As I continue this series, I’ll look into the technical expertise and long-term value that a lighting designer can offer. But I wanted to start where it all begins, with the artistic vision, because in the end, it’s the creativity and artistry that turns a house into a home, an office into a sanctuary or a public space into a community landmark.
